"Eager Beaver" was a B-17G of the 306th Bomb Group, 368th Squadron. Flying alongside is a P-51 Mustang from the 361st Fighter Group, 374th Fighter Squadron. In air combat, aircraft sometimes became separated from the rest of their group as a result of damage or for other reasons. Sometimes stray or crippled aircraft would join up with bombers from another group, or, as in this case, one B-17's flight home was a made a little less tense by an escorting P-51. Enemy fighters were lurking about and the bomber crews found it comforting to have the company of a 'little friend'. Down below, the RAF Coastal Patrol is ever vigilant in case someone has to ditch in the Channel. This painting is interesting because both aircraft depicted in it were flown by the same pilot during his combat tour in Europe. He transitioned from bombers to fighters - something that didn't happen often. Eager Beaver |
