In this painting of a Grumman F6F-3 Hellcat, I tried to capture a sense of the activity on the deck of a U.S. aircraft carrier when planes are being brought up on elevators and readied for launch. It takes a lot of effort to keep things running smoothly on a carrier, and even one aircraft can can keep many people busy. It reminds me of a beehive with worker bees surrounding the queen, attending to all her needs. As the Hellcat rises to the deck of a carrier somewhere in the Pacific, the day's first sunlight shines on her wings and the deck personnel perform their assigned tasks to ensure the mission is a success from start to finish.
