The second phase of The Battle of Britain began on
24th August 1940 when the Luftwaffe attempted to destroy the seven key
fighter stations around London. Flight Officer Brian Carbury, a New
Zealander flying with No. 63 Sqn., based at Hornchurch in Essex, shot down
eight Me-109E's in his Spirfire Mk 1 between 29 August and 2 September 1940,
and became an "ace in a day" by downing 5 'Emils' during three patrols on
31st August. During the final combat in the early evening he claimed two
Me-109's from 1./JG3 in a dogfight over the Thames Estuary east of London.
