"Battle Of Britain"

The second phase of The Battle of Britain began on 24th August 1940 when the Luftwaffe attempted to destroy the seven key fighter stations around London. Flight Officer Brian Carbury, a New Zealander flying with No. 63 Sqn., based at Hornchurch in Essex, shot down eight Me-109E's in his Spirfire Mk 1 between 29 August and 2 September 1940, and became an "ace in a day" by downing 5 'Emils' during three patrols on 31st August. During the final combat in the early evening he claimed two Me-109's from 1./JG3 in a dogfight over the Thames Estuary east of London.
