"Baron Nishi's Last Stand"

The task of defending northwest quadrant of Iwo Jima fell to
Lt. Col "Baron" Takeichi Nishi who commanded the 26th Tank Regiment.
Nishi was an accomplished horse rider and had won a Gold Medal for an
equestrian event in the 1932 Olympic games in Los Angeles. He was fond of a pair of English riding boots he had aquired and wore them with spurs.  On the morning of D+20 U.S. Marines threw a satchel charge into the cave which served as Nishi's  headquarters, partially blinding him and wounding several of his men. In the painting, Nishi's wounds are attended to by an officer while the remnants of his command prepare for their final battle.
